SILVER WEDDING

MAJOR AM) MRS. M. E. BROUN I A very happy event was celebrated on Saturday evening at the Masonic Hall, the occasion being the silver wedding of Major and Mrs. M. E. I Brown, of the Salvation Army, Gf Abbott Street, Gonville. The party was arranged by members of the family and about 150 guests were present and spent a very happy evening. Dr. McKenzie fulfilled the duties of master of ceremonies. Mrs. McKenzie and Mrs. A. Spurdie were responsible for the attractive decorations in the hall, the flowers being in autumn tonings. Miss Shirley Brown, on behalf of the family, presented her mother with a beautiful bouquet in autumn shades. Mis. Brown wore a rust coloured frock, relieved with gold trimming. The wedding cake had been decorated in silver by Mrs. George Larkin As well as many floral tributes a num- j her of telegrams from all parts of i New Zealand were received. Mrs. A. J. Penberthy, a bridesmaid at the wedding, was present, also Mr. ( Coyte, of Patea, an old friend of Aus tralian days. A presentation of a silver cake disk was made by the Gonville Salvation Army Corps. Speeches were given by Chaplain Frazer, Mr. George Larkin, on behalf of the neighbours, and Mr. George Turner, of Blenheim, a cousin of Mrs. Brown's. Although Mrs. Brown ■ had been in New Zealand for 30 years ■ and Mr. Turner for 40 years, this wat I the first time they had met. Items enjoyed during the evening were as follow: Mrs. Oliver Wilson, [vocal solo, and with Miss Zena Boya, | sang a duet; recitations, Adjutant I Gower and Mr. Britton; mouth-organ solo, Mr. L. Adams; concertina solo, I Mr. Humphreys; pianoforte solos, ■Misses Shirley Brown and Joyce Reid. I Chaplain Frazer sang “Home Sweet Home" in Maori, and with a party of ■young people gave a Maori haka.
