Taranaki Hack Cup, of £250; nine furlongs.—Chief Lord, Bronze Step, Viracious, Race Camp, Mercury Bay, Inquisitor, Nereus, High Test, Glenthawn, Pantheist, Noble Fox, Ail Bunsby, Ramleh, Autosweep, Leighon Rei, Kilometre, Tane. Mahotu. Colonel Bogey showed considerable improvement on his first day’s display when he placed the second-day Empire Handicap to his credit at Feilding on Saturday. The Nightmarch gelding was apparently expected to do better in the weaker field, for he carried £942 10s on Saturday, as compared with £249 (in a smaller pool) on Thursday. Perhaps the track conditions were more to his liking, but even off-the-course information appeared to be aware of his improved prospects. Colonel Bogey had previously won the Heretaunga Handicap, over a mile and a-quarter, at the Trentham spring meeting, and he looks like developing into a useful middle-distance performer.
