WANGANUI HORSE FAIR WIDE RANGE FOR BUYERS FAIR FIGURES REALISED A total of 264 horses of all classes came forward at the Wanganui horse fair, conducted by Freeman R. Jackson and Company on Saturday. The heavy yarding was more than the [market warranted and buyers had a I wide range to make their selections from. Good reliable horses *in all classes made quite fair figures, but anything aged and not got up to first- | class saleable and attractive condi- ■ tion was neglected and in many instances remained unsold. Eighty-one unbroken horses w'ere yarded. No really heavy horses were offered in this section but a few good types came forward, top price being for a 3-year-old grey filly on account of Mr. Maurice Campbell at £2l. This section was very mixed in quality and made down to as low as £2. The broken heavy horses comprised some very i nice sorts but the entry, comprising 114 in this class, was more than required, with the result that some cheap horses were sold. The South Island horses, attractively got up and well groomed, attracted most attention and sold at what appears to be in buyers’ favour. Top price was £35 10s for a very nice draught (illy, 8 years, all work, but good young draughts were sold at from £25 Io £3O. while useful heavy horses were sold from £l5 up. The broken hacks and light horses comprised 69. There was practically no demand for these at all. About a dozen made fair figures but the bulk were passed and in several instances no offers were received. The quality generally was very poor and the demand the poorest Freeman R. Jackson’s have had for some considerable time, at this time of the year. Most back country farmers are busy shearing and this, no doubt, kept several buyers away. Prices were as follow: Unbrokens.—Three-quarter 1o half draughts, £l5 to £2l; half draughts, £8 10s. £l5; fair hacks, £6, £l2; others. £2. £5. Broken Heavy Horses.—Good heavy mares, all work. £25, £35 10s; do., geldings, £25, £29; heavy mares and geldings over 8 years, £2O, £26; aged but reliable, £l2. £18; aged and non-de-script, £4, £10; good light draught to half draughts, £l7, £23; spring carters, good, £l5, £l7; fair, £lO, £l2; aged, £5, £9’. Broken Hacks.—Fair hacks, up to 6 years, £B, £l3 ss; over 6 years, £5 to £7 10s; aged, £1 10s, £4; ponies, £5, £5 ss; aged, £2, £4.
