OLYMPIC DISTANCES FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
WANGANUI WANTS VISIT OF AUSTRALIANS [ Per Press Association.J WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. Delegates of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, at the annual meeting in Wellington to-day decided that m future distances Hr championship races in New Zealand shall be the Olympic distances, Dr. Menzies (Auckland), moving the adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet, said it was unfortunate that the weather for the New Zealand championships at Wellington had been unfavourable. If the council went on with the proposal to invite a crew from Australia they should be able to finance it with a grant of fbUO from an art union. Mr. C. G. tiei'dman (Auckland) referred to me good work done by the secretary anu treasurer, Mr. i. .4. Hinkley, ana said all oarsmen regretteu that he was vacating office. Mr. Hinkley saia that ne xen that he" owed the association an apology for giving up the office ot secretary after having only held it for one yeai. seeing that his predecessor, Mr. a. D, Bayfield, had hek.l office for 32 years. However, the extra wore caused by the outbreak ol war had convinced him that he could not do justice to the position. Mr. T, Watson (Wellington! moved: "That tne question of abandoning the championships during the war be finally considered at me end of December. 1939.” Mr. Herdman moved an amendment to the effect that for this year the championships be carried on, and aftei this year they should be postponec till tne war is over. The amendment was carried by a large majority. Mr. Watson, on behalf of the Wellington Association, moved that the visit ot an Australian crew be abandoned. Mr. E. J. Crotty (Wanganui, moved that it be a recommendation to the council that the invitation Li an Australian team be proceeded with Mr. Hinkley said that the last advice he had had from Australia was that the matter would be considered at the September meeting. The New Zealand Association was enthusiastii about the visit. Il was pretty certair a crack Australian crew would conn over. Mr. L. E. Brooker (Auckland! moved as an amendment that thmatter be left in the hands of Un council, with a strong recommenda lion that the invitation be proceeds with. The amendment was carried!. A remit from the Auckland Asso elation: “That Rule 22 be repealed am the following substituted: The distant’ for all championship races shall b Olympic distances.” led to a long dis eussion. A Wellington remit: ''That Rule 6 be altered to read that the judges fo the championship regatta shall be ap pointed by the local association unde whose jurisdiction the regatta will b held, subject to the approval of tn council, and that a new rule be ii sorted to read: The umpire an starter officiating for the five chan pionship events at the championshi regatta shall be appointed by th council,” was carried.
