PAYMENT FOR “TAKING DIVES” Received Oct. 31, 8.50 p.m. CHICAGO. Oct. 30. The Illinois State Athletic Commission has barred Galento, Schmeling and Harry Thomas and their managers Joe Jacobs and Nat. E. Lewis, from | further fights pending a gubernatorial I inquiry. The Chicago Tribune published alleged affidavits in which Thomas says that by arrangement between Lewis and Jacobs his fights with Schmeling on December 13, 1938. and with Galento on November 14. 1938, were faked in order to build up reputations for challengers seeking bouts with Louis. He says he received 8500 dollars for "taking the dive" against Schmeling and was promised 6000 for his meeting with Galento. i

Henry Armstrong retained the world 'welterweight title against ■•Bobby” Pacho with a technical knock-out in the fourth round. DEATH OF JOCKEY FALL IX HURDLE RACE NEW SOI TH WALES TRAGEDY. Received Oct. 31, 10.50 p.m. SYDNEY. Oct. 31. The jockey Timothy Healey was killed when he was thrown during the running ot a hurdle race at the Richj mond meeting to-day.
