FORM FOR WHANGARE
PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLDS Auckland comment (Special to "Chronicle.") AUCKLAND, Oct. 31. Only three juveniles are engaged in the Maiden Stakes at Whangaret on Friday next and this suggests that it may be deemed too early in the season to match these youngsters against older horses and in rather large fields. One of these two-year-olds is Cillas, a black colt by Diatamous from Monanui. This colt participated in the juvenile parade at the Pakuranga meeting two and a-half months ago and he impressed then, although a long way from being ready. The breeding of Cillas bring to mind the doings of his sire and dam. Monanui was well known in the north, for she was a good handicap performer. One of her best efforts was to win the mile and a-half Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie four and a-half years ago, and so it was unfortunate that she did not train on subsequently. Diatamous was a brilliant sprinter in the colours of the Manawatu sportsman, Mr. M. Millar, and he finally found his way to the far north, where he was successful also, and was then retired to the stud. Bucaneer’s Chances. The much-boomed Buccaneer is among those listed in the Maiden at Whangaret on Friday next and he would only need to be half as good as his New Zealand Cup entry suggested to be numbered among the winners. So far he has shown no form this season, but the opposition this week-end will not be strong. Another likely sort in this class is Lady Fox, a half-sister to those good gallopers Gay Blond, Gay Sheila, Marie's Acre and Philcourt. She was placed more than once last season among the good two-year-olds, so her chance may come now, for she will be improved by the outing she had at Cambridge. A horse that looks like starting a very warm favourite in the open sprint at Whangarei the first day is Maxam. Her last appearance in open company produced a win, at Paeroa, and with 9.6 she finished fourth in a division of the hack sprint at Ellerslie a fortnight later. The stable has paid up for Maxam in preference to Bronwen, recent Ellerslie winner, and this ought to be a guide to backers, for on the handicaps the issue appeared to be between them. Brazilian For Whangarei. Since he bled and was pulled up at Ellerslie at the spring meeting, Brazilian has been galloped freely at Takanini and the trouble has not reappeared, so the syndicate that owns the gelding has decided to send him north to race at Whangarei. At this centre Brazilian won both the open sprints last April. These were his last successes, incidentally, although in one or two instances he met with very bad luck in his races. Brazilian has only 7.1 in next Friday’s sprint and if he could be produced at his best Maxam would find it difficult to concede him 131 b. Apart from Bisquit, the hurdlers engaged at Whangarei on Friday next are not a particularly bright Jot. The horse mentioned is the only winner over sticks engaged, and his last few outings have been very disappointing. Novices are Bachelor King and Ro-
mani, and the latter particularly has been showing aptitude in his schooling. although his stamina was in question when he raced on the flat. Bachelor King is an interesting entrant, and he is also in the open sprint. He may contest the flat race and come in among the jumpers on Saturday. The three-year-olds are strongly represented at Whangarei’s opening on Friday next, and among the two likely candidates of this age are Heroic Maid and Valerian. The former has not started this season, but with her great turn of speed she should give her opponents something to think about in the hack sprint. In the longer hack event, run over seven and a-half furlongs, there is Valerian, a fine colt that won three races last season. He showed up for half a mile at Ellerslie recently and then took on the open sprinters at Cambridge, his chance being extinguished at the start. That he contested such an event indicates that something is thought of him, so he ought to win at Whangarei, where he also scored at forlorn odds just twelve months ago.
