POACHING OF FUR-SEALS

Occasionally the Forest and Bird Protection Society receives complaints about the poaching of fur-seals, which are protected by law. A century ago these animals were very numerous on certain parts of the coast of the South Island, but they were nearly exterminated by uncontrolled gangs ol killers. The Fisheries Act provides for a penalty of £lOO for each seal taken in breach of the protective law. and it is also stipulated that any equipment such as vessels or cars used by a poacher is liable to confiscation.
