THE MELBOURNE CUP

BIG FLEMINGTON EVENT LIST OF FIRST ACCEPTORS MELBOURNE < LT Of Xl't.fiOi) and £2OO Cup; two mile.

RECORD FOR NEW ZEALAND HORSE GOLD SALUTE'S PRICE MR. ALAN C OOPER’S PURCHASES I When the young Sydney millionaire, | Mr. Alan Cooper, gave £lO,OOO for the Lord Warden colt Gold Salute an hour before the A.J.C. Derby, the purchase price constituted a record for any New Zealand horse of that age. The previous best figure was the 7000 guineas, also given by Mr. Cooper, for Maia, the honour being shared by the Bulandshar colt High Caste, who was purchased at 7000 guineas by Mr George Tancred for J. T. Jamieson's stable. Carbine, it may be remembered, was purchased by private treaty at six years by the Duke of Portland at a price stated to be 13,000 guinea.,. Gold Salute’s price, however, is not. a record for Australia. That distinction is held by Talking, for whom Mr Cooper paid 19.000 guineas between the colt's successes in the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies. Another high price was the 16,000 guineas given foi Heroic by Mr. C. B. Kellow after that colt's success in the Caulfield Guineas. Gold Salute is a fine stamp of chestnut colt by Lord Warden out of the Paper Money mare Frenzied Finance whose promising race career was cue very short and whose stud career has * been a series of misfortunes. Frenzied Finance’s first foal (\as Miladi, by Weathervane, and then four successive foals died. The next two were Warden's Gift, a filly, and Gold Salute, both by Lord Warden, ano the next foal, by Nightmarch, also died. Frenzied Finance was a very speedy mare when racing, and she* was a winner of the Wanganui Debutant Stakes at her first outing on the racecourse. Six weeks later she ran her last raoe when finishing second to Royal Ceres at Masterton. CORDON HANDICAP. (Of £500; six furlongs).
