REGENT THEATRE
“MYSTERY ()J MR. \VON<„" AM) “FLIGHT TO FAME.’’ The thrilling .story of a fatal jewel' and three murders is Monogram’s exciting “The Mystery of Mr. Wong,” screening at the Regent Theatre. Continuing the adventures of James Lee Wong, Chinese detective, it is the .second in a series of “Wong” pictui<‘s which Monogram is making with Boris Karloff in the leading role. “The Mystery of Mr. Wong” concerns the* theft of the fatal “Eye of the Daughter of the Moon" from China, By Brandon Edwards, well-known collector. At a house party where James Lee Wong is one of the guests, Edwards is murdered, and his death unveils bitterness and hatred enshrouding the household, as a result of Edward’s cruelty and pettiness. Outstanding is the performance of Boris Karloff as the Oxford educated “James Lee Wong.” Always an intelligent actor, Karloff plays Wong quietly, giving the detective character and integrity and a quality of kindness not always possessed by screen sleuths. Dorothy Tree does well with the role of Valerie, unhappy wife of Edwards, who is in love with her husband's secretary. Craig Reynolds is good in this pari; because he plays tie secretary with a forcefulness whZch destroys any hint, of weakness in his character. “Flight to Fame,” is the story of a death-ray which is not accepted by the authorities until the inventor, whose intellect has weakened through continual refusals of a trial, works the ray out on aviators at work. Charles Farrell and Jacqueline Wells are starred in what is an exceedingly *
realistic series of (hashes and soni< spectacular stunt Hying. “Romance of the Redwoods’’ Jack London’s “Romance of th Redwoods," a Columbia product ioi featuring Charles Bickford and Jea Parker, is to be Saturdays feature Gordon Oliver, Lloyd Hughes, An; Shoemaker, Al Bridge and Joh Tyrrell are seen in strong support in. roles. “Blondie" is the associate fei ture and on the same programme wil. be the first episode in “The Lorn Ranger," a thrilling new serial.
