CATALOGUE'S FEAT

I THREE WINTER CUPS I I DAM HAS CAKBIKE BLOOD i Catalogue, by his great win under •10.3 in the Winter Cup, the only horse ever to win this hard mile event three jyears in succession, has shown hiin’self to be one o£ the best horses ever Ito race over this distance on the Now Zealand turf. He has never been ; beaten over a mile at Ricearton, ano 'his performance yesterday was rei markable for a horse who had had only three races since winning the ! Melbourne Cup last November. Now I nine years old, he is a wonderful horse ■for his age, and it is almost certain (that tnis "plain-looking” equine, as he i was dubbed, by his umriendly Australian critics, will now cross the Tasman in quest ol his second Melbourne Cup, in which he is allotted weight is 9.U. He is the oldest horse ever to win in-? (Winter Cup, and Awapuni riders—W. i J. Broughton, G. R. Tattersail and W. : Jenkins have successively piloted him; Ito his wins in this event. He won I under 8.13 the lirst lime, and with 9.JG I last year. It is interesting to recall I that Dictate, second this year, was seciond to Catalogue in the Winter Cup : two years ago. I Catalogue has now won £11,556 10s lin stakes. His record consists of 12 I firsts, 14 seconds and 10 thirds. i Catalogue has been described by his riders as a horse who never knows when he is tjeaton, and he is a battler to the finish. Powerfully built, he has a great raking stride, and had been working well at Awapuni before going south, though no exacting tasks had been required of him. Hi.s condition is a great credit to his mentor Mrs. A. W. McDonald. He had a nar- , row escape from electrocution early this year, it will be recalled, and this put him off the scone for some months. He did not have a race from the time he returned from Australia until the Manawalu meeting in May. He has written his name very boldly in the records of Now Zealand racing, and he still holds lhi' track mile record at Ricearton. His original purchase price was 110 guineas, and lie is owned by Mrs. T. Jamieson and was bred | by Mr. W. G. Stead. He is by Lord Qu?x from the Catmini -Symbolism ’mare Catallni. Catmint is by Spearhninl, winner of the 1906 Derby and the greatest English son of Carbine. i This is where Catalogue gets his ■strong strain of Musket blood. Catmint, the maternal grandsire of Cata- ; logue is out of fid Lily, who was by the St. Simon horse Persimmon, wini ner of the Derby in 1896 in the Royal i colours. 'Fhe lirst St. Simon—Musket j cross is therefore in Catmint, and is 1 doubled up in the mating of Catmint s now defunc daughter Catallni with : Lord Quex.
