LAMBING SEASON
NOW UNDER WAY MORTALITY REPORTED TO BE I.OW. SHORTAGE OF WINTER FEED. Lamoing is now well under way in the coastal districts surrounding Wanganui but will not start in earnest in the inland districts lor about another fortnight. The spell of fine, warm weather last week was appreciated by the farming community and gave many of / ■ young lambs a good start. Hundreds of lambs have been born in the Wangaehu and Turakina districts and mortality is reported to be low. Many lambs have been born in I he Maxwell and Kai Iwi districts but lambing is later in Waverley and the surrounding country. According to reports the young lambs are quite hardy at birth and have been able to stand up to the cold weather without harm. There is a shortage of food throughout the district and carrots, mangolds, turnips,, swedes and chou moellier are being fed out to stock. In spite of the unfavourable season last year, hay is quite plentiful in the North Island but is scarce in the South Island. The price for hay is much lower than was expected and quite a large amount has been shipped to I he south where conditions have been much more severe this winter.
