TO-MORROW’S RUGBY MATCHES

' WANGANUI TO PLAY KING COUNTRY i - RANFURLY SHIELD ■ MANAWATU TO CHALLENGE SOUTHLAND AUCKLAND AND THE 'BAY In the Rugby representative programme for to-morrow, and of direct . interest to Wanganui, will be the annual match with the King Country team, to be played on Spriggens Park. The match will be of interest not only . because the visiting fifteen will include C. A. Crossman, one of the noted . five-eighths of the North Island, but because the Wanganui selection committee has made an experiment in the first five-eighth position, placing the , representative full-back, K. Welsh, there and calling on F. Thompson to be full-back, a position he occupied , with credit in 1937. At. the head of the day's programme ! of representative matches will be a challenge to Southland for the Ran- ' furly Shield by the touring Manawatu team. The Hawke’s Bay team, whicn played in Wanganui on Wednesday, is to play Auckland, at Auckland. Other matches to be played are: Otago v. Bush, at Dunedin; North IOtago v. South Canterbury, at Tim- | aru; Buller v. Golden Bay, at Westport; Manawatu v. Horowhenua, at 1 Palmerston North; Poverty Bay v. East Coast, at Gisborne a Pownali i Trophy match is to be played < / Tai- ■ hape between Wainui-a-Rua (chai- < longer) and Taihape. 1 W anganui v. King Country. The selected teams for the match at. Wanganui to-morrow are: Wanganui.- -Full-back, F. Thompson (K.); three-quarters, .1, Polson [ < (WOB), M. Dickie (Wav.), M.lShewan (TOB); five-eighths, G. Hook I (WOB), K. Welsh (WO.B); half-back, H. Brogden (K); back of scrum, T. I ' Collins (WOB); mldcue row, E. V. Beiliss (K), A. G. Davidson (P), W. i Firmin (K), W. Gienn (K); front j ; row, M. .1. Sutton (WOB), E. .1. Cai-i i laghan (K), L. Northover (WOB). Reserves: V. Kench (P), B. Goldsbury (TOB), forwards; E. Nicholls (WOB), R. Hunter (WOB), and J. Morgan (K), backs. D. G. Barton (WOB) was not available. Cameron; half-back, Mossman; back of scrum; Willison; middle row, Hancox, Woods, Trusttum, Powell; front row, Collin, Davis, Waretine. Reserves: Back, Rush; forward, Lane. Hare to Play Full-back. Although the Auckland represent-i live Rugby team to meet Hawke’s Bay it not yet finalised, the back division I has been announced and shows two ' changes. In place of F. Pearson, who has been transferred back to Canterbury, D. M. L. Martin, of University, will play in the centre three-quarter position, while W. Hare, of Marist, will take the full-back position of H. N. HalliwelJ, of Ponsonby, who has played in all the side's matches to date this season. Hare will be rememberied for his good displays with the ■ Auckland Marist team at Wanganui ’ in the Spillane Cup tourney at Easter. : Thirteen forwards have been an- ! nounced from which the pack will be I chosen. I The back division is as follows.-- ■ Full-back: W. Hare (Marist). I Three-quarters: L. Dick (Gratton), 'D. M. L. Martin (University), L. i Schubert (Grafton). j Five-eighths: N. Pearman 'Grafton), D. Brady (Suburbs). Half-back: J. Pile (Training College). Emeregencics: C. Brady (Suburbs', B. Grant (Ponsonby*, L. Curtayne (Marist). The 13 possibilities for forward positions are as follows: -A. Moffitt ’ (Marist), R. Anderson (Grafton). C j Pepper (Manukau), W. Knight (Ponsonby), T. Pearce (Grafton), W. N. 'Carson (Ponsonby). R. R. Hull (GrafHon). D. N. Whillans (North Shore), F. Solomon (Ponsonby), H. F. McLean (Grafton', W. McGrory I (Marist'. Hare’s Selection Surprising? i Commenting on the selection of 1 Hare as the Auckland luli-back in I place of Hallivvclj, the New Zealand I Herald says that the change is sur- | prising after Halliwell's very line disi play at Whan garni against North ! Auckland. In making the alteration the selector no doubt regards Harp a'a match-w inner by means of his goal- ■ kicking. The second changi is at centre- . three-quarter, made necessary by the transfer back to Christchurch of L. I*. Pearson. This vacancy has been filled : by D. L. Martin, who was a regular i member of the representative side I last season. Ow ing to injury, however, he has played comparatively ,\tre

football this year, and. seeing that he has not appeared for some weeks, Martin may be considered fortunate in being given preference over others who have played regularly. It will not be surprising to see some changes made in the forwards afUr the team’s defeat at Whangarei. A more solid type of pack is necessary. Thirteen possibilities have been announced, and eight forwards and three emergency forwards have been selected to go to Gisborne to meet Poverty | Bay. A surprising omission is that of C. Brown. Here is an honest forward who has played solid games against Waikato (twice) and North Auckland. In fact, he was one of the few who were always where the hardest work was to be done. Now, from being good enough for inclusion in the first eight, he is not even in the first twenty-four! Surely this is an oversight on the part of the selector. The Hawke’s Bay team will not be selected until to-night. No Changes in Southland Team. The following team will play NorSouthland in the Ranfurly Shield match against Manawatu to-morrow: Full-back, J. W. Fleming; threequarters, A. G. Sutherland, A. W. Wcsney, R. G. Mahony; live-eightho, C. K. Saxton (captain), M. P. Grace; half-back, .1. W. Purdie; front row. V. L. George, W. Sherriff, C. Soper; middle row, R H. Ward, D. B. Herron, S. E. Purdue, G. H. Graham; back row , A. R. Marshall. Reserves: C. F. McKenzie, E. Calvert. R. Gibb, F. | McEwan, T. Fordyce, J. Newall. The team is the same as that which defeated Otago on Saturday. Mr. I. Dillon will be the referee. The Manawatu team was beaten by North Otago at Oamaru on Wednesday and arrived in Invercargill by the express last nigiit. Its team to challenge for the shield will be announced to-day. Otago v. Bush. The following team has been selected to represent Otago against Bush at Dunedin: Backs, B. Wil kins. D. Murray, N. A.
