RUAPEHU SKI CLUB

LARGE MEMBERSHIP WANGANUI branch activities. Not including lhe strong Wanganui branch, which was formed on July 4. more than 100 new members joined the Ruapehu Ski Club during the year ended May 31, which closed with a membership ot 442. In spile ot the increased entrance tee, applications for membership continued after its imposition at practically the same rate as for the < orresponding period last year, states the report to he presented at the annual meeting at lhe Chateau on August 25. The number ot users of the club hut. on .Mount Ruapehu substantially increased, the report states. At holiday week-ends the accommodation proved inadequate and permission was sought from the Tongariro National Park Board to make extensions. The application had not been dealt with in the period under review in the report, but the latest issue of the club bulletin states that the board has granted permission for extensions, to provide for further shelter accommodation and an additional 24 bunks, subject to plans and specifications being approved. Warm appreciation is recorded of the Tourist Departments efforts to improve access to the main ski-ing grounds, and to provide facilities there, and particularly of its establishment of a modern ski school under expert guidance. The accounts show the year to have been very successful financially, with increased revenue from subscriptions and entrance fees. There was an excess of income over expenditure, and £lO2 was transferred to the accumulated fund, bringing this to £983. Revenue from hut fees amounted to £6B. The Wanganui branch has a membership of more than 50 ski-ing enthusiasts. Mr P. L. Dickson is chairman of the executive, which comprises Messrs. H. T. Arnold, F. P. Koorey, T. F. Latham, and W. C. Ryland. A party of about 25 members of the club spent last week-end at Mount Ruapehu, where ski-ing instruction was received from Franz Skardarasy. A booking of the whole of the club hut at Ruapehu has been made for the week-end of September 23 and 24.
