"GRAND JURY NOT OBSOLETE”

VIEW OF MR. JUSTICE OSTLER ( Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 18. “It has become the fashion to say that grand juries have become obsolete and should be abolished,” said Mr. Justice Ostler in his charge to the grand jury, in opening the criminal session of the Supreme Court. “That is not my opinion, which is that grand juries provide a valuable safeguard for the liberty of the subject.” He said that there were 17 indictments against 14 persons, which he understood was much below the avirage in Auckland. After detailing the circumstances shown by the depositions in the case of the Maori, Wißism Pera Paki, of Kaikohe, charged with attempted murder, attempted suicide, and manslaughter, the Judge said there might be a defence of insanity, but every man was to be considered sane until proved otherwise, and the case was one in which they doubtless would find a true bill.
