In the Davis Cup singles finals against Philippines, r.t Long Beach, Bromwich (Australia) defeated Sanchez (Philippines), 6-1. 6-1, 6-3, and Quist (Australia) defeated Ampon (Philippines), 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Ampon gave another remarkable exhibition of returning everything, but the Australian was just too powerful. Quist had difficulty with his overhead shots, but his ground strokes were working well and proved sufficient u. beat the F’ lpino handfly. In the first set, Quist won the first four games. Ampon then picked up his pace and took three in success;.)!. In the second set. with the games 3 all, Quist broke Ampon’s s°i vice, running the games to 5-3 beiorv A.mpon took his fourth and il : game. Ampon’s best position m Uit thi. l set was 2-2. Playing in a manner in direct con1 trast with yesterday's cu/iy showing, 1 Bromwich defeated Sanchez without ■ ceremony, although the Filipino’s I game was much improved over that in the match with Quist. Bromwich's “ two-handed strokes were working ■ perfectly and he continually fired 1 deep drives which found no answer. Bromwich took th? first four games before Sanchez held his service to win his only game of the first. s°t.
