PLAGUE AMONG JEWISH REFUGEES

PACKED OX SHIPS OFF SYRIAX (OAST. Received July 18, 1 a.m. JERUSALEM. July 17. Plague broke out on one of four ships carrying 2560 Jewish refugees lying off the Syrian coast after failling to penetrate the British cruiser j patrol on the Palestine coast. Several died and were thrown overboard from the ship, whereon 650 were allowed to enter Beirut to enable disinfection of the ship and land the patients under quarantine conditions. A second vessel, with 600 aboard, mostly from Hamburg, tried to enter 14 ports. The two other boats are carrying Austrians and Czechoslovakians. All four are short of food and water.
