WOODERSON’S TACTICS
£)IS( l SSINg last Saturday the ‘'mile of the century” race, in which AVooderson was obstructed, the Chronicle defended his tacties against the attack made on them by the. sports writer of the Manchester Guardian. Confirmation of the Chronicle's view is to be found in the report by “L.M.,” of AVooderson’s running of a. three-quarter mile race on June 6. when he actually established a world record for the distance (a distance now not recognised by the International Amateur Athletic Federation). AA'ooderson was still fourth when he completed the second lap, with the leading man twenty yards ahead of the bunch. The following descriptive paragraph best tells the story: ‘'Suddenly, amid a roar from the crowd, AA’ooderson put on steam at the bell and at once drew out. For another 20J yards Collyer kept at his heels, but then even he could not live against the marvellous dynamic fury which drove AA’ooderson’s apparently frail body on. Round the last bend AA'ooderson seemed to find yet another accession of strength, and he came to the tape through the wind like a railway engine, while the crowd nearly burst its lungs.” Clearly the tacties which stood AVooderson in good stead in Manchester in June were being employed by him during the race on the Princeton track.
