OBITUARY

.HR. ( . SMITH The death occurred in Waipukuiau Hospital of Mr. Charles Smith, a wellknown resident of Takapau. The youngest son of the late Mr. James Smith, a well-known farmer in Canterbury. in the 'forties, he was born at Teddington Bay 80 .years ago, ami in 1881 married Miss Mary Miller Patrick, younger daughter of William Patrick, Geraldine. They went to the Dannevirke disI trict in 1884, taking up bush land at Kiritaki, and Mr. Smith interested himself in local body affairs, being chairman of the Maharahara Roaci Board, a member of the Woodville County Council and of the local school committee. He was a foundation member of the Dannevirke A. and 1. Association. He moved to Takapau in 1910, taking up the sheep farming property later known as Dun Lee. where breeding of farm horses gained for him a wide reputation. Mr. Smith is survived by a widow ' and four sons Messrs. W. J. Smith, C. J. Smith, H. D. Smith, and C. P. Smith—and four daughter^—Mrs. J. Babbage (Terrhunga), Mrs. L. Manson (Takapau), Mrs. F. A Rugby match played during the week-end between the junior team;, of the Wanganui and Palmerston North Post and Telegraph staffs, resulted in a wdn for Wanganui by 12 points to 5. W. Stewart (a penaltygoal and two tries) and M. Stewart (try) scored for Wanganui, and D. Gough scored Palmerston North’s only try. Mr. A. R. Byres refereed the game. The Palmerston North visitors were entertained at tea before they returned Irome. .
