KAIERAU’S WIN

MARIST BEATEN BACK AND FORWARD OUTSTANDING GAME BY BELLISS | I Kaierau beat Marist back and forward and a great deal of the cause of Ihe big win for the maroons was a good display of football by E. Beiliss, who played soundly in both tight anu loose. L. Connor, the Marist full-back, was called on tor heavy work and h*i saved the side repeatedly. Once again the value of E. Callaghan, in the centre of the front row of the maroon, pack, was fully appreciated. F. Thompson, at first, five-eighths, also played a sound gam?. 'Thompson having come back into the team, and C. McNichol being available, there was no need for Beiliss to play at centre, and the learn found good use for him in the pack. E. Barry, ihe Marist captain and leader of the van, was well marked. It was as though Kaierau had gone out with a knowledge that much trouble would come from him and he was carefully looked after. The constructive play made by the Callaghan-Brogden-Thompson-Morgan comhination in the Kaierau team, proved too much for the greens to cope with. The only back who played constructively in the Marist. team was A. J. Darby, at. centre. On one occasion. J. Doyle made a great spurt for’ the greens, but. C. Mackie, who later scored two good tries, was just a shade too fast. Barry's footwork was in evidence early, and E. O’Halloran did a good deal of spoiling. To Callaghan, Kaierau owed a good deal of its mastery in the van. He went down repeatedly and stopped the greens as their pack was coming through with the ball. It was in the second spell, when tn? Marist team was down 11 points, that the green pack gave an indication of the form it. displayed at the beginning 'of the season. Il was then that Darby j made one or two nice openings with stab punts to send Doyle racing for possession. One one occasion he just missed a try. I B. Dow, L. Taylor, E. Barry and E. ■O’Halloran played with a touch or* I dash only in stages, and there was not. the sting about the green pack its supporters expected. Apart from Beiliss, K. Larsen, W. Firmin, W. Glenn and E. Callaghan played soundly for Kaierau. Kaierau’s first try came when J. Morgan drop-kicked, either for tne goal posts or the corner, and the ball bounced near the corner flag. C. McNichol and C. Mackie raced up and Jt was just a question of who got there first. The honour fell to Mackie and he scored. Brogden, Thompson, Morgan, McNichol handled the ball in that order, and McNichol scored for Morgan Vi convert.—Kaierau 8, Marist 0. Larsen scored when two green players, attempting to force, hesitated a* to who should do the job. Morgan ‘ missed the kick and Kaierau led by ' Il points shortly after half-time. The total was raised to 14 when Morgan cut through and sent Mc- ■ | Nichol and Leydon on. for Leydon to j score. Ten minutes before the end of I the game Morgan kicked a field goal, to put Kaierau’s total up to 18. Thelast three points came from a try by ; J Mackie, who, profiting by an opening 1 | made by Thompson, ran from nearly l halfway to score, making the board iread: Kaierau 21, Marist 0. J Referee: Mr. W. Molan.
