The New Zealand Federation of Labour has passed a motion protesting against a statement, alleged to > have been made by Captain Davy of the Awatea to the effect that “Nobody was working in this blasted country.*' - The federation requests an apology to workers, failing which it is stated ■ that the workers affiliated to the organisation will take such action as i may he deemed necessary to compel cessation of unwarranted attacks on workers. Captain Davy is away from New i Zealand at. the present but before leaving on his trip to Sydney this week he is stated to have denied responsibility for the statement attributed to him. The general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. Ltd., when seen ttiis evening, said that it appeared clear that Captain Davy had been discussing trouble caused by stowaways on his vessel and hi.s remarks had been directed against them and not against, workers. The statement referred to was con tained in a message from Auckland in which Captain Davy stated that Ne \ Zealand was attracting persons tn stow away on ships, as they thought . it was a land of milk and honey.
