M.A Litt.D • Cantab.». had a distinguished scholastic and miltary career. He was born in 1879. the son of a Cambridge University tutor, and was educated at King's College and Peterhouse. Shortly before the ..ar hp was a lecturer at Harvard University 'U.S.A.'. In 1915 he joined the Dardanelles ex- j pedition as a captain the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, and three \ ears I later hr was appointed general staff] officer, second grade. He also served j in the Salonika force, vas actingattache to Serb a, and took part in the Peace Conference. He was ; member of the mission to Montenegro ] in 1918-20. and British representative . o. the Albanian Frontiers Commis- j sion in 1921. He assisted in editing th? “British Documents on the Origins j of the War.” and wrote many other • works. He was president of the International Hislorw Congress since 1933. and as a lecturer al Stanford University «U.S.A.» in 1936. BRIGADIER-GENERAL (. G. BRI ( E. LONDON. July 12. _ - dier-General Hon. Charles Granville Bruce. Brigad>r-Gcneral Bruce had a distinguished war record in India prior to the Great War. and in the latter struggle he commanded the 1 6th Gurkah Rifles in Egypt. IF served throughout the War and was mentioned in despatches twice in the Dardanelles campaign. Later he served with various Indian forces in the Afghan and the Waziristan areas, and retired in 1920. He was chief of the Mt. Everest expedition in 1922 and 1924. He was a well-known scholar, too. and held several honorary degrees.
