BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ AGRICULTURAL CLUB

WANGANUI-MAIN TRUNK DIVISION REPORT ON ACTIVITIES, 1939

Following is the annual report of the Wanganui-Main Trunk Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs to be presented to the annual meeting on Saturday next:— From the number of completed projects the year must be accounted a very successful one. In the root crop section .two hundred and forty-eight plots were presented for the judges’ inspections, while the animals paraded before the judges in the calf-rearing competitions, totalled three hundred and ninety-four. In the Taihape area, lamb raising clubs were fostered and fifty-two animals were judged at the various schools. For purposes of organisation the district is divided into live groups. Completed projects in the various area were as follows: Senior Root Group. Animals. Crops. Lambs. Patea-Waverley .... 135 37 Wanganui J 1 <» 7? Marton .. * 4 4 ' Jft Taihape 63 .VS ,V2 Raetihi 42 6.’ 394 24. S 52 The assistance rendered by the varir ous group committees in the development of the work in their respective districts, is gratefully acknowledged. Without the help of the enthusiastic members comprising these committees, it would not be possible to record the steady development hat takes place from year to year. Root Crops. The season generally was considered to be a very favourable one. Notwithstanding this, the plots judged (248) reached the highest total for many years. In addition to this, the quality, as a whole, was much better than usual. These very successful issues may be ascribed to the close attention paid to regular and thorough cultivation. The value of the soil mulch seems to be recognised by most of the youthful competitors. The mixed plots still seem to find general favour and continuation of this form of competition is recommended. Several requests that mangels and sugar beet should be replaced by vegetable crops, were made. At last annual meeting it was decided to supply soya beans to plot owners, for inclusion in the optional rows. The variety obtained. Extra Early Dwarf Manchu. though tried in the great, majority of plots, proved a failure. In the Taihape district, other varieties were tried and the results obtained from these will be the subject of a report by Mr. Terry at the annual meeting. The records kept by the pupils reached a high standard. It is pleasing to be able to record this and the thanks of the judges are extended to the teachers for their assistance in this particular connection, as well as for their lively interest in all matters pertaining to the well-being and general development of the clubs. The Petersen Cup. Most meritorious performance in the district was won by Wangaehu School. The efforts of the following schools were such as to warrant special mention: —Umumuri. Orautoha, Raetihi, Pirfaka, Otukou. Tokaanu, bfgutuwera, Hurleyville, Maxwell, Parewanui, Western Rangitikei, Ohingaiti, Utiku, Mataroa, Bell’s Junction.

The Farmers’ Union Challenge Shield, awarded for cultivation and records. was won by Pakihikura School in the Manawatu-Oroua Division. Calf Ciuis. It. is with deep regret that we record the death, during the year, of Mr. T. M. Remington. The deceased gentleman was a very keen supporter of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Movement, was a member of the executive committee and, year after year, acted as judge at various schools. By his passing the club lost a very enthusiastic worker. Schools taking part in the Calf Club activities number 36 and the animals paraded before the judges during November and December, totalled 394. Calf entries totalled 248. It will thus be evident that senior animals paraded at schools numbered at least 150. It is very pleasing to note that interest is maintained in the animals after they pass the calf stage. I At most schools the pupils presented their charges in excellent condition | and the judges were unanimous in their praise of the competitors’ efforts. It is felt that these clubs are doing excellent work in the various districts. Judging. The major portion of this work was done during December. Once again we are indebted to various breeders and supporters who gave so freely of their time and of the benefits of their experience, in most cases life-long, to assist the boys and girls. The gentlemen who acted were as follows:- Messrs. J. Robb and C. J. Masters. Wanganui: W. G. Cooper, Rapanui; W. Riddell. Wangaehu; A. M. Sims, Turakina: W. P. Wallace. Waverley: H. Hodge. Alton: S. Morgan. Mangatoki; W. Parker, Ararata. Records. The quality of the work produced in the booklets was of a high order and the educational value of these efforts was considerable. The teachers are thanked for their interest in and supervision of these notes. Thanks. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co., and Messrs. Cooper, Ltd., through Dalgety and Co., are accorded the thanks of members for assistance in supplying manures and seeds issued to competitors in the root crop competitions. In conclusion we record our appreciation of 17 support given by the N. Education Department, and by the various Farmers’ Unions, A. and P. Societies, and Dairy Companies, etc.,

which subscribed to the funds of the various groups in the district.
