A BEAUTIFUL PEST

treacherous water HYACINTH Beautiful and treacherous is the. brightly coloured water hyacinth, a 1 common weed in Bengal. It grows fast in shallow waterways, choking them, allowing malarious mosquitoes to breed in stagnant reaches, and hindering all traffic. At last a vigorous drive against it was made during the week April 23-30. All Government officials and the public in general were urged to take part. Posters, pamphlets, leaflets, dramas and songs are being utilised to s%ir the province to the proper frame of mind and proper activities of limb and muscle. The province has an Act for the eradication of the pest, but. little action has been taken under it; there are difficulties jn the way of making it operative. The week was Bengal’s first large experiment In grappling with the hyacinth, though this has been steadily abused in legislative sessions and conferences for twenty years.
