GORDON THOMPSON MEMORIAL

RUGBY CLUB SCHEME CONDUCT AND DRESS OF TEAMS TECHNICAL OLD BOYS AND PIRATES LEAD The Gordon Thompson Memorial competition promoted by the Wanganui Rugby Union to encourage good conduct of players, dress, punctuality, loyalty to captains, and other similar football niceties, is being handled by a sub-committee of the Wanganui Rugby Referees' Association, Messrs. W. Molan, W. B. Broadhead and K. Love. The sub-committee has released for publication the position of the clubs as at the end of the first round of the senior competition. The placings are:— Pts. Technical Old Boys 30 Pirates 25 Marist. 24 Waverley-Waitotara . 24 Kaierau 23 Wanganui Old Boys 22 Kauangaroa 22 Taihape Old Boys 21 Taihape Country 18 Technical College 15

Th<» Collegiate School teams, had they been assessed on lhe few games they have played, would have been at or near the top, but the committee decked that it would be best not to show the school’s position until more matches have been played. Something the same applies to the Technical College teams, though they have played more matches.

The committee has taken the average number of points awarded by referee? under three headings, the maximum under each heading being 10 (a) conduct on and oft the field and spirit of the game; (b) punctuality on field of play at. kick-off and halftime; (c) loyalty to captain, adherence to rules and completion of official team slip;. (d> appearance of the teams as regards dress. "The senior teams have been well up in all requirements,” the fcub-com-mittee comments in its report, “but a little more attention to punctuality, dress and conduct of players in the lower grades would make a change in positioning. The referees are very pleased with the marked improvement shown and believe that that improvement will continue. This is only a progress report, and it is certain that changes will take place in the second roumT.”
