Sir, —May I be permitted through the columns of your valuable paper tn appeal to the public of Wanganui for funds to carry on and extend the work among the youth of this city. For twenty-six years the Young Men's Christian Association here have played an important part in the ph\sical, mental, spiritual and social training of our young men and boys Its aim is the building of true citizenship and the promotion of com munity service and civic pride. The wide interests of youth so long served by the Young Men’s Christian Association have now been extended t< cater more adequately for our young women and girls by the formation of a Wanganui Young Women's Christian Association. This work will be under the supervision of Miss Vera Marshall, a vci\ highly trained young lady, appointed from the staff of the National Council, Wellington, who will with Mr. A L. Rounthwaite. our general seeptary, organise activities in which boh young men and women will joint I. participate. The development in an ideal en vironmc’it cannct but appeal strong c to the parents of our young people. These two associations, which ai controlled by one Board of Mana;, meat are approximately 59 per cent self supporting, the other 50 per cent is donated by interested business an. professional men and women and th public generally, who feel some pei sonal responsibility towards our youth But, sir, to efficiently carry out th j extended work, maintain an efficien trained staff, renovate and extend foil nishings, maintain the building an< equipment, all of w-hich had to be neg lected during the lean years of the <i<’ pression it has become necessary foi more friends to accept a share of 1 hr financial responsibilities. I earnestly appeal to the public ot this city to fully realise the great im portance of this work, by subscribing liberally and early towards meet in, these vital and urgent needs of on young people. The amount required is £5OO, an I feel sure that this amount will b» fully subscribed during lhe next fe. days.
