SOUTH AMERICA

DOMINION’S STUD SHEEP APPRECIATED The South American market is still a valuable one for New Zealand stud breeders. Easily the highest average price is secured for the quality shipments to these States. A consignment has just been arranged by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., to fill several orders secured from Uruguay and Argentine. Included in the shipment are 10 Southdown ewes from E. M. Hare, Feilding; nine Southdown ewes secured at the dispersal of Mr. T. May's stud; three stud Lincoln rams bred by Mr. E. Wilton, Wairarapa; one stud Lincoln ram bred by G. V. Smith, Gisborne; one stud Romney ram from each o£ the following breeders: A. Wheeler, Marton; J. G. Alexander, Maxwell; F. E. Humphries, Ngatapa; Sir William and W. E. Hunt, Wallacetown, Southland.

A remarkable sidelight on the regard shown for New Zealand Corriedale in South America is contained in a newspaper cutting just received from Buenos Aires. The leading Australian Corriedale breeder, Senator J. F. Guthrie, in an endeavour evidently to establish the Australian Corriedale in South America, sent over a selected consignment of his own breeding. At the auction of these sheep ther’e was not one bid, and very little active interest was shown in the sheep at all. This contrasted greatly with a sale of New Zealand Corriedales on consignment, where the average was 85 guineas. The newspaper cutting concluded that the Australian sheep had not the correct carcase conformation or wool as required by the South American market, and the heads were far from impressive.
