TAIHAPE HAPPENINGS

ARBOR DAY (Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, June 20. The matter of arranging for the observance of Arbor Day has been left in the hands of the Mayor, town clerk and Mr. E. A. Abbott, superintendent of parks and reserves. FENCING RESERVES ON MAIN NORTH ROAD The Taihape Borough Council decided on Friday evening to approach the Rangitikei County Council for the supply of wire as previously offered for fencing portion of the reserves bordering on the main north road. COOKERS AT CAMP SITE The approximate cost of providing electric cookers and hot water system at the camp site is £5O according to information which Mr. E. A. Abbott has supplied to the Taihape Borough Council. DECEASED RETURNED SOLDIERS The recommendation of the Parks and Reserves Committee, that no interment and registration or other fees be charged for deceased returned soldiers under the provisions of section 15. Statutes Amendment Act, 1936, was adopted at Friday's meeting of the Taihape Borough Council.

PLUNKET SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Taihape. branch of the Plunket Society will take place in the Tow'd Hall supper rooms, Taihape, to-morrow (Wednesday), June 21, at 2 p.m. All members are requested- to attend. HUA STREET TAR SEALING PROPOSAL At the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Friday evening the Works Committee recommended that Huia Street be sealed during the year 1939-40 out of maintenance. The Mayor expressed the opinion that it would be wise to wail until the end of the year and see what money was available for the sealing of Huia Street. The sum of £35 had been placed on the estimates for this street and he did not think that other streets shodld be robbed of maintenance in order that Huia Street should be sealed. Cr. Kearins, chairman of the Works Committee, said that the committee had no intention of doing anything in the matter until the end of the year. He agreed with 'the Mayor that it was wise to wait. ELECTRIC A L ENGINEER S REPORT The electrical engineer (Mr. W. J. Dellow) submitted the following report at Friday's meeting of the Taihape Borough Council: — There has been no improvement in I the river level during the past month, the available plant having to carry I overloads for long periods and in order to supply the demand it was necessary to cut off the street lighting on several occasions. The gas plant and substation have been in use each day, the gas plant running for 260 hours and the substation for 687 hours 49 minutes. On Saturday evening, the 3rd instant, the load on the gas plant had

to be reduced on account of a burntout firebar. But'for the co-operation of the shopkeepers with our request to reduce the heating and lighting load as much as possible, there wpuld have been a failure of supply. During Friday, the 12th ultimo, it was noticed that the concrete protecting wall at the intake tunnel had shifted and was leaning over towards the dam. A heavy totara plank bolted from the dam to this wall appears to have stopped it from collapsing into 1 the darn. If it did so it would have ■ damaged, and possibly blocked, the

screens and intake tunnel and cut off the water supply to the hydro sets. The chairman of the Electric Light Committee, Mr. A. M. Ryan, the chairman of the Roads and Streets Committee. Mr. P. Kearins, and the borough foreman, Mr. J. M. Scott, were taken to the dam to inspect the damaged wall. Temporary repairs were carried out by the use of tie rods and concrete anchors and at the end of the wall an old screen was put down and sand bags placed to stop the water from getting in behind the wall. It is essential that this wall be attended to. I would recommend that a new wall be erected and instead of running up the river it be made to run into the papa bank. Mr. H. D. Arthur has commenced repairs to the power house. TAIHAPE YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB The monthly meeting of the Taihape Young Farmers’ Club, held on I June 14, was well attended. An apology was received from Mr. A. R Fannin, advisory member, who wa: ; unable to be present. The following • new members were elected: Messrs , W. Galvin, A. Hammond. R. Cooper. Mr. S. V. Smith gave a most inter- . esting account cf his recent visit tc - Australia.
