TAIHAPE RAILWAY FOOTBALL
PALMERSTON NORTH DEFEATED '.Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, June 19. In tne first round of the southern section in the competition lor the Cascade Cup competed for by the railway teams from I rankton to Palmerston North, Taihape secured a one-point victory over Palmerston North during the week-end at Taihape by six to five in a very even and closely contested match. Palmerston North was the superior team in the first half of the game and, with the inclusion of four Manawatu reps in the side, seemed to be at home on the somewhat greasy ground. Taihape, however, rallied in the second half and with tight play in the serums and fast following up at times harrassed the visiting rearguard. The scores obtained by Taihape comprised a try by R. Carkeek after some loose play within the Palmerston North twenty-five, the ball having travelled along most of the Taihape back line. F. Bailey, who played a sound game at. full-back, secured Taihape’s next three points by a fine penalty kick. Palmerston North's came in a try by the Palmerston North captain, Brian McCashin, after a fine forward rush, and a conversion by the Manawatu representative full-back, H. Carr. Taihape has not yet been beaten on the home ground and much interest is centred in the coming match with Wanganui at Taihape in the near future. The Taihape team was as follows: F. Bailey, K. Atkins, V. Hamlin, J. Listan, R. Carkeek. R. Johnston, T. Siddle, R. Gabolihsky. I. Crawford, J. Lloyd, H. Bougen, L. Clark, E. Morris, S. Grav, W. Healey.
