WANGANUI HARRIERS

Members of the Wanganui Harrier Club were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. Dustin at their residence in Churton Street, last Saturday. A field of 37 runners competed in a 5£ mile course, consisting of three miles of road and the balance in hills.

Next Saturday will be the first leg of the Benson Gate trophy race against Masterton Club, to be held from the Wanganui Racecourse at 2.30 p.m. Members are reminded lo bring along something toward afternoon tea which will be held after the race. The committee have been fortunate in making arrangements with the Pipe Band for a grand carnival dance to be held in tne Canton ballroom on Saturday night, when the Masterton harriers will be the guests of honour. A few further notes on this big annual event will appear in Friday’s papers. The club was very fortunate in having two new members to turn out for the run last Saturday. M. Stinson and R. Anderson ran very well for their first turn out. P. Lock, a junior ran one of his best races to date by winning the second leg of the Excelsior Cup. J. Hammond ran his first race of the season; he ran a steady race throughout, catching the limit men alter about one and a-half miles had been covered. Much more will be heard of this runner. Bromley, a newcomer to the Wanganui Club, ran an excellent race, gaming third fastest time. M. West ran his usual steady race and must be congratulated in gaining fourth place. A. Simpson has shown great improvement this season and more will be heard of him in later races. R. Francis again showed promise of developing into a fine runner. He ran well and set a solid psice throughout the race. T. Brooks ran a steady race; he is not a brilliant performer but is a good trier, and alter all that is the main thing. N. Grant, a junior, finished well, beating his co-marker, H. Walker, by 19 seconds. H Hopper, despite an enforced spell, ran well considering that it is his first run this season. K. Johnston and A. Pemberthy ran steadily throughout the run, but were unfortunate in losing the trail. G. Ravenwood and C. Harper finished well after a bad run for the' first few miles. A feature of the race was the fine effort of C. Cox who again secured fastest time. This runner has not been beaten for fastest time in club races this season.
