WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT WESTMERE The Westmere Institute held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Mrs. Robinson presiding. The feature of the afternoon was a talk on “Life in China,” given by Mrs. Kerr, of Gonville. Two delightful vocal solos were presented by Mrs. Blake and an original sketch was played by the drama circle. Mrs. Preston gave the golcien thread series with intimate glimpses of Herr Hitler. Three competitions were well entered for, Mrs. Brownlie winning the best flower and Mrs. Ryland winning the lemon honey and novelty tea cosy prizes. The monthly W.I.lN'. competition was won by Miss Fiest. Hostesses wore Mesdames Norrie, Remington, Wilson and Pennefather. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. K.AITOKE The June meeting of the Kaitokc Women’s Institute was well attended, Mrs. Owles presiding. After a welcome had been extended to all members and visitors the usual business was dealt with. Arrangemerfs were made for members to assist at. the international exhibition of handcrafts when they are to be shown in Wanganui. It was decided to continue with the first aid talks. Two members received gifts from the birthday box. The golden thread was given by Mrs. Brine, being on London and proving very interesting. The July meeting will be “Members’ Day,” with Mrs. Gowan as president and Mrs. Cameron secretary and a happy day is assured. It. was decided to have a play ready for the festival and the commit Ice hopes that, all members will support this worthy object. Results of competitions were: Bottled .fruit: Mrs. Pritchard 1, Miss Pritchard 2, Mrs. Shanks 3. Eggless cake: Mrs. Anderson 1, Mrs. Palmer 2 and Mrs. McKernan and Miss Aitken equal 2>. Best Hower from garden: Mrs. White 1, Mrs. Campbell 2, Mis. Scott. 3. Shoulder spray: Mrs. Bradshaw I, Mrs. Pritchard 2, Mrs. Gillies 3. Competitions for July arc pair knitted bed sox, apple snortcake and for the garden circle 12 violets. Hostesses lor July will be Mesdames Caldwell, Tremain, Palmer and Garner. The next committee meeting will be June 26. Afternoon tea. was served and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
