AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE

STRATEGIC ROADS PLANNED. For use in national emergency new! roads are being planned in various parts of the State. These will be built by relief labour under direction of the Public Works Department. The most vital section of coastline in Australia is that stretching from Newcastle, the big industrial centre north of Sydney, down to Port Kernbla. a rapidly rising “Newcastle of the South Coast.” To travel from Sydney to Newcastle by road involves crossing the Hawkesbury River at Peat's Ferry, by large vehicular punts. As an important road link with Newcastle, it is now proposed to reconstruct the historic cattle route from Richmond (just below the Blue Mountains) to Putty, and to improve the existing road from Putty to Singleton to meet the New England Highway. This road will be the shortest route from Sydney to Newcastle.

In the Blue Mountains there are only two roads—the Main Western Highway, and the route from Richmond to Kurrajong and Mount Wilson. It is now proposed to add a route from Yarramundi to the Springwood Lookout, which will give direct access from the Hawkesbury Valley.
