WANGANUI HOCKEY

RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S PLAY MEN’S COMPETITION The Wanganui Hockey Association's senior-grade competition was continued on Gonville Park on Saturday afternoon. Hinemoa A and Technical College drew in a scoreless match. Wesley beat Hinemoa B by one goal to nil. Hinemoa A 0, v. Technical College 0 The first game on Saturday, .between Hinemoa A and Technical College, ended in a draw, neither team being able to pierce the other’s defence. At times the game was veryeven and good hockey was played by the young lads from the college. The game was robbed of some brilliance by the Hinemoa team being only able to field eight men. However, Technical showed up to better advantage and it was just bad luck that good movements were not finalised. The players showing up above the average were Subharwal, Kamal, in the forwards, Capp, centre-half, and Isted In goal, the last-named, lad bringing off some nice “saves ’ for Technical. For Hinemoa, S. Hughes. Breed and Gibbons played well and extricated their side from many dimcult situations. The Hinemoa goalie saved brilliantly, his footwork being very much in evidence. The game was well controlled by the referees, Messrs. Glenny and McIntyre. Wesley 1, v. Hinemoa B 0 This game was well fought out by both teams and quite a lot of good play was shown by members. From the bully-off the pace set up by the forwards on both sides was fast, with the result that the ball was being hit up and down the field with hard hitting and fast following up. In this respect the Wesley forwards were a shade better than the Hinemoa forwards but good defensive work by the Hinemoa backs kept the scon ng down The final score of one goal in favour of Wesley might give some indication of the difference between the two teams. For Wesley. Tizard. Thrush, Greenfield. R. Hughes, Knight and Mackie showed up well and brought off some good movements. Connett, in goai, was very safe and acquitted himself with credit. For Hinemoa B, L. Stewart, Myers, Mclntyre (2) were responsible for good stopping and fast following up. On more than one occasion, Stewart was unlucky in not being able to equalise matters for his side. Pope, in goal, was also a tower of strength and brought off some very clean and brilliant “saves.'' He had no chance with Thrush’s shot at goal, which was a real beauty. Messrs. Glenny and Hughes controlled the game. WOMEN'S HOCKEY KAIVVHAIKI BEAT ARAMOHO This game was played on No. 3 ground, Gonville, and proved to be very fast. The Kaivvhaiki team combined well and played good hockey. Among those who showed up prominently were Misses Mary and Polly Wiwi and Mrs. Joseph. The game ended in favour of Kaiwhaiki by 4 goals to nil. Mrs. M. Simpson and Mr. W. Upton controlled the game. Technical College won from Kimihia by default. The result of the game between Collegians and Gonville was not available.
