SOCIAL SECURITY AND WOMEN

Sir, Alter reading with interest “E.C.’s" letter ot lhe 13th inst. re “Social Security and Women,” 1 would like to add some points which may be of interest to readers and Social Security taxpayers generally. Now, in asking the women of Wanganui to join in the protest, why put the burden on the shoulders of our *1 women? Surely, after the Christchurch women have shown us they have the courage and backbone to stand for British justice, it is up to the men of this country to come up to the front-line and show that they have enough grit left to fight against this tax injustice. Now, sir, there are several points I wish to point out to the taxpayers. Firstly, when businessmen and farmers began their year on April 1, 1938, the tax was 8d in the £ and they ran their businesses accordingly, but, alas, on March 31, 1939, they are faced with Is in the £ and the Social Security Act did not I come into force until April 1, 1939. I Secondly, pre-election speeches, and later the Social Security Act promised us hospital treatment free, doctors | free, medicine free, in fact everyI thing relating to health was to be free. Now there is nothing free and | still we are expected to pay 4d in the I £ for something it is very doubtful if we will ever get. If this is not an unjust tax I would like to know what injustice really means. "E.C.” suggests that the Christchurch forces be strengthened, so arise men and women alike, and fight for your rights.—l am, etc.. “BRITISH JUSTICE."
