OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent). The usual monthly meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, there being present: His Worship the Mayor (H. Delamar), and Crs. H. Morrow, T. Clancy, F. Standish. W. Profftt, T. Gordon, F. Mahony, H. Rush, O. Spillar, and L. Jordan. Before commencing business His Worship mentioned the fact that since last meeting, Cr. Morrow’s wife had passed away. He moved that a motion of condolence be passed to Cr. Morrow in his sad loss, this being carried by the council standing in silence. Rating.—His Worship stated that he thought it was time the council gave serious consideration to the changing of its method of rating from the unimproved to the capital value, as he thought perhaps it would prove a more equitable method of rating. The clerk was preparing figures on the matter and these could be considered at a later meeting. Cr. Spiller said he thought that rating on the capital value might tend to retard progress in building in the town. Before it could be decided, the council would have to have the figures and comparisons. Correspondence. The Waimarino Plunket Society wrote thanking the council for its grant of £5 towards the society’s funds. The Raetihi Borough Council wrote thanking the council for the support given in preventing the felling of further bush at. the headwaters of the Mangawhero. Makotuku, and Makara streams. The N.Z. Railways stated that any damage done to railway property due to the construction of the dam, the council will be held responsible. The engineer had interviewed the railway engineer in regard to this. Notice was received from the Treasury Department consenting the raising of the council's housing loan of £3600. It was resolved that a rate of 4 3-8 d be struck for the purpose of guaranteeing the housing loan. It was decided that cyclists caught riding without a rear reflector at night be given a warning first, and the next time caught be summoned. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Rush that the Mountain Road track be continued on to the metal pit, and then metalling of the portion which has already been formed. The council inspector reported that the slip of the bank at the camp site bridge has had willow cuttings planted at the back of it and this should prevent further slips occurring. He reported that the walks were in good condition, but if the council could sand or clay the path, which is greatly used by the public, from the entrance at the back of the bowling green to the camp site, it would be a big improvement.
