Dazed, when a van he was driving skidded into a bank and turned a somersault on the New PlymouthOpunake main road before dawn today, Malcolm Yeates, of New Plymouth, recovered his senses to find the vehicle on fire and his foot held firmly. He managed to free himself from his shoe and crawl from the

overturned van, which was a total loss. Yeates was driving down a slope when the back wheels skidded on the high crown of the road. The van became uncontrollable and ran into a bank, somersaulted and came to rest upside down. Yeates was stunned and did not at first realise that the vehicle i was upside down until he saw the flames.
