THE VIOLOCELLO

AN INTERESTING HISTORY. The ’cello recital which is to be given next Saturday by Miss Joan Cranstone is something of a rarity in these days for the ’cello is not a frequently played instrument. It is, however, a delightful instrument providing an opportunity for the executant to accomplish rich tones and emotional passages. The violocello came into existence soon after the violin and in the eighteenth century replaced the Viola da Gamba. For a long time many musicians preferred the latter instrument but, gradually the ’cello, as it is now called, won its place and has retained it ever since. It is said to be one of the easiest of instruments with which to become acquainted but one of the hardest to learn. Miss Cranstone has gained a mastery of the technique of this rare instrument and many people are looking forward to hearing her for the first time on Saturday night.
