YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB DANCE Arrangements have been finalised for the annual dance to be held under the auspices of the Marton Young Farmers' Club. This will be held in the Empire Hall, Marton, on Wednesday, May 10. The committee aim to better last year’s successful fixture and have secured the Midnight Revellers’ orchestra for the night. MARTON CIVIC THEATRE DICK FORAN IN “PRAIRIE THUNDER’’ “Prairie Thunder,” an exciting melodrama of the days when hostile Indians tried to prevent the white man from linking coast to coast with hio railroads and telegraph lines, will be finally screened to-night (Friday) at the Civic Theatre, with handsome, hard-riding Dick Foran as its hero. “The Vampire Bat.’’ In “The Vampire Bat,” Action Pictures thrilling mystery film, there is told an amazing story of adventure in a little Austrian village, where for centuries has existed the story of vampires—dread beings that can be humans by day and blood-sucking bats by night. To such a village comes Melvyn Douglas, as a detective endeavouring to trace a series of ghastly murders. He is told of the vampire, but does not believe such a far-fetch-ed story, until irreputable proof is given him. A plague of bats infests the village, the terror walks by night as the mysterious being seeks its prey —attacking men and women in their sleep, strangling them, and draining the blood from their lifeless bodies. Supporting the star, Melvyn Douglas., are Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, and George E. Stone. POPPY APPEAL IN MARTON The annual sale of poppies which was launched last week by the Marton Returned Soldiers’ Association met with an excellent response from the public, the sum of £67 9s being raised for relief among ex-servicemen in the district. More poppies were sold this year in Marton than last. RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL The Rangitikei County Council meets on Thursday, May 4. CARNIVAL NOTES The Country Baby Committee will hold a sale of produce in Broadway on Tuesday, May 2. Any contributions will be thankfully received by members of the committee. On Wednesday, May 3, a dance is being organised in the Druids’ Hall. The Town Baby Committee had a good attendance at their picture entertainment in the Civic Theatre on Wednesday night. bl. JOHN AMBL LANCE MEETING TO-NIGHT The ambulance and nursing divisions, at Marton, as usual paraded for the Anzac Day parade, and although several members were absent owing to illness, there was a good muster of both divisions. The executive committees of both divisions meet this (Friday) evening, at, 7.45 p.m., at. the Marton Jockey Club’s rooms, to discuss with the ladies' auxiliary the arrangements for May 6.
