Harbour Board Loan

“Ratepayers in the Wanganui Har- ■ hour Board’s rating area yesterday demonstrated in a most conclusive manner their faith in the great possibilities of the harbour and in t lhe methods which the Harbour Board proposes to take to make Wanganui one of the principal deep sea ports of the Dominion,” states the "Chronicle” on April 29, 1914. The board’s proposal was to raise a loan of £150,000 and this was carried by 1563 votes to 61. "The board will immediately cable ,to England for an up-to-date dredge, which has been selected

already, and proceed with the construction of wharfage accommodation and a floating basin,” stated another press report. There is at present a depth of 25 feet at the mouth of the river where there was only 12 or 14 feet before the harbour works were started.”
