ON HAWERA TRACKS

WINTER PREPARATIONS YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Conditions were ideal for training operations at Hawera yesterday morning, when the outside of the course proper, with the trestles out about 25 feet, was available for fast work. Despite overnight rain the track was in good order, with the sting out ot the ground, writes “Goldspur ’ in the Hawera Star. Fiancee (Ryan) was first to work and sprinted half a mile smartly in 50Asec. She appears little the worse for recent racing and should give a good account of herself at Egmonl next week.

> Erin Lad (Sexton) and Lady Kyra . (Cochrane) were to have galloped half a mile together, but tne lirsi mentioned broke away going around to the post and the pair ran separately in 53isec and 55sec. respectively. • Erin Lad and Silk Sox, who both carry the colours of the Urenui sportsmen, Messrs. R. G. and S. Topless, are recent additions to H. Scally’s stable. Friesland (Frisk) easily held the measure of Lickem (Sexton) at the close of half a mile compassed in 51 3-ssec. Friesland infused plenty of dash into his task and ho should not be long off the winning list. Lickem is not working very generously. Notium (Sexton) displayed his usuai brilliance when getting to the end ot six furlongs in 1.17 3-5, the first three in 38sec. This Lysander gelding is thriving on his tasks and he promises to take a lot of beating in his future engagements. Race Call (Riley) broke away from Ramleh (Farland) on the way round to the five furlong peg and covered three furlongs in 41sec. before being pulled up. Ramleh’s Puzzling Form. On his own, Ramleh traversed five furlongs in 1.7 3-5 without being unduly hurried. Ramleh’s inferior display at Waverley puzzled his connections, but after the race his rider, G. R. Tattersail, explained that Ramleh commenced with his head very low and after covering the first furlong he thought there was something amiss with the Rabbi gelding and he subsequently eased him up. He is an unusual type of galloper, with a peculiar action, and as Tattersail had the mount on him when he bled badly at the Egmont summer meeting it was excusable that he arrived at such a conclusion. However, Ramleh has suffered no recurrence of the ailment during the interim and he may make amends at Hawera next week. Lady Boden (Riley) shaded W r ee Ethel (Farland) at the conclusion of half a mile in 53 3-ssec. Student Prince (Sexton) finished a couple of lengths in advance of Gwenland (Holland) over five furlongs in 1.5. The former should be in firstrate order for future hurdling engagements. Pretty Lass (Sexton) ran six furlongs in 1.17 4-5. The three-year-old Kiosk filly is racing solidly at present and will be heard of again in the near future. With a good deal the worst of the weights, Gitana Lass (Chaplin) comfortably disposed of Kokako (Sexton) at the end of half a mile in 52isec It is feared that Kokaro is suffering from respiratory trouble, which does not augur well for his future prospects. Bright Schooling. On Wednesday morning Disturbed (C. Eley), Silk Sox (W. Grindlay) and Amoroso (J. Toki) were companions in a schooling bout over six hurdles, giving a masterly exhibition. For a novice Amoroso shaped promisingly and a course of hurdling may improve his stamina. Disturbed continues to impress and he is a good prospect for important jumping hon- • ours this winter. Silk Sox derived ■ benefit from his outing on the flat at Stratford and he is fairly forward for : the jumping season. The ’chaser Master Hector (W. Grindlay) who has joined R. Brought team until after the Wanganui winter meeting, fenced well when schooled , over the sod wall and hencoop. He : is feeling the effects of recent racing . on hard tracks, but moves freely when • warmed up.
