LIVESTOCK MARKETS

HEAVY YARDING AT LEVIN Unusually heavy yardings were offered in all sections at Tuesday’s stock sale in Levin. Prices for porkers remained on a par with late rates, but baconers were in demand and brought higher prices. Fat cattle and vealers were hard to quit, because of the large yarding, and prices showed a slight decline. There was a keen demand for dairy cattle and values showed a good increase. Fat ewes of good quality brought high prices, but the demand for store sheep was poor. Prices from Abraham and Williams, Ltd., are:— Pigs: Light porkers, 26s to 355; medium, 38s 6d to £2 ss; heavy, £2 7s to £2 15s; baconers, £3 to £3 6s; small stores, 5s to 8s; larger, Ils 6d to 18s 6d; prime, 23s 6d. NORSEWOOD SALE AL the Norsewood stock sale held this week the Hawke's Bay Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., offered a small yarding of sheep and cattle. All classes of stock sold on a par with recent sales. Quotations are:— Sheep: Wether lambs, 6s 9d; twotooth wethers, 13s 3d; aged ewes, 4s 6d to 5s 6d. Cattle: Springing dairy cows, £4 15s to £7 10s; heifers, £4 12s 6d to £6 10s; store cows, £1 15s to £3; potter bulls, £4 to £6; weaner heifers, £1 10s to £2. STORTFORD LODGE Very little alteration in price levels was noticeable on Wednesday in the store sheep section of the stock market at Stortford Lodge, when 6000 head were penned. An outstanding offering comprised a large draft of more than 1000 two and four-tooth wethers, on account of Major Armstrong, Mungitaniwha Station. The four-tooths, well-framed, fat and forward, and carrying good slipe, met with a keen demand to sell at 16s 6d, the highest price recorded for several weeks. A second offering also drew good bidding to sell out in two cuts at 14s 6d and 14s Bd, and the mediumconditioned carry-over wethers sold at Us 6d to 12s 9d, light sorts 10s Id. Few entries of in-lamb five-year ewes were on offer. Those that were made from Ils to 12s, this being cheaper than ewe fair prices. Lambs met with a moderate inquiry only, and were slow to sell. Shorn pens in hardy and sound order made Bs, woolly ewe lambs, small to medium-grown, 13s, killable Down-cross lambs Ils 6d, fattening ewes in poor condition 3s. Beginning at par to a shade lower than last week's prices, the fat cattle market was weak with bidding slack. The larger yarding of 300 head sold at close to freezing rates, though later in the sale the operations of an outside buyer in the heifer classes brightened up the sale considerably. The yarding included a fair percentage of quality pens, but little demand was shown for anything. With no competition, butchers were able to buy in their own favour. Very little ox beef was on offer, and what there was was made up of medium-grown bullocks, which sold cheaply at from £8 10s to £9 10s. Very heavy cows, solidly finished, realised £6 to £7, medium to heavy sorts from £5 to £5 10s. Light pens lacking finish and plain in quality were difficult to trade at from £4 to £4 10s. Heifers were in good supply, being chiefly medium-grown pens which ranged at from £5 10s to £6 10s, later entries making to £6. Vealers were again in over-supply, and only the best realised anything like late rates, the remainder selling at from 20s to 30s. Several pens of cows and heifers showed signs of going off in condition, and would not stand further holding.
