WANGANUI REPERTORY SOCIETY

r yHE Wanganui Repertory Society, which held its annual meeting last night, is again to be congratulated upon the success which has come to it. The causes for the success of this society are worthy of study because, if the same, methods which are applied with such happy results by the Repertory Society were applied in other directions, there would be fewer failures. The first and foremost, reason for the success of repertory is that those in control have refused to allow cliques to be formed. Hiving-off into little sets is bad manners in any case, but it is disastrous to a society because it breaks down the unity of the members. The next, reason is that new members are welcomed and given parts in plays. In the last production there were five new members in the east, some of whom having been entrusted with leading parts. The next reason for success is the fact that each member is given an opportunity for taking active part in the plays or in the management of the society. This is a very important, point and explains the reason for the success which attends the various lodges where a ritual is performed, requiring participation by a large number of members. Finally, there is the willingness on the part of the members to do those necessary tasks behind-scenes which do not, look much but which add a great, deal to the completeness of the achievement. Besides the acting there is some splendid work done by those who undertake the stage management, lighting, scenery production, ushering, assisting in make-up, and also in those tasks which have, to be performed after eacliplay has been produced. The society is deservedly popular, it has attained to a very high standard <»f play-production, and it has created a definite theatre-sense in the minds of the Wanganui publ/c. Besides, it has kept on an even financial keel. Hood luck to repertory.
