CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL (Own Correspondent PATEA. April 3. The sum of £lO 10s was raised at a shop day on Friday organised by the Patea Women’s Institute in aid of the paddling and swimming pool funds. A competition for a cake was won by Mr. R. Mercer. INTOXICATION CHARGE Ngarino Tamou. a native, was arrested by Constable Kelly and Mr. Petersen, traffic inspector, at Patea on Friday on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. He later appeared before Mr. E. F. Hemingway, J.P.. and was remanded to appear at Patea on April 5. _ ALPINE CLUB Mr. J. Peacocke presided at a meeting of the Patea branch of the Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday. It was decided to hold a dance at Kakaramea on April 11 and to send invitations to other branches. Hooker’s Orchestra was engaged. The second social evening will be held in the Domain shed on Tuesday, April 4. Arrangements were made for a large number to go up to Mount Egmont on the Sunday. ODDFELLOWSHIP At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Patea Lodge last week N.G. Bro. D. Thomson presiding, it was decided 1o send a letter of congratulations to Bro. N. B. Bellringer, district secretary. New Plymouth, on his appointment as grand master of the order in New Zealand At the close of lodge. I.P.N.G. Sister J. Smith was presented with an electric jug in view of her approaching marriage, and musical honours were accorded her. PATEA MUNICIPAL BAND The ladies’ committee of the Patea Municipal Band entertained members of the band on Friday evening in the Town Hall supper room in recognition of their success in the contest. After supper the president, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, congratulated members on their wonderful success, due in great measure to their excellent team work. Other speakers to add congratulations were the Mayor, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, Mr. C. H. Carey, Mr. F. ! Spooner, a former conductor, Mr. A.I Coyte (patron). Mrs. A. A. Carey. I president of the S.T. Federation of i W.l’s., and Mr. R. W. Haddow. Mr. K. Christiansen (conductor), replying, thanked the speakers, and said their victory was largely due to the spirit of co-operation amongst members. He thanked the ladies for entertaining them and for assistance always given, Mr. R. W. Haddow, drum-major. Mr. Rockett, and every bandsman for the way they had rallied round him. The president naid tribute to the secretary. Mr. W. Smith, for the healthy state of finances, and to Mr. Haddow. Letters of congratulations received were read from the Mayor. Cr. Fuller-Sandys. Patea Fire Brigade, Patea branch of the? R.S.A., Patea Football Club. Waitara Band. Messrs. Maule, sen., N. R. Coad. W. Ray and J.
