DRINK AND MOTORING

OFFENCES BECOME FREQUENT EIGHT OFFENDERS IN WANGANUI THIS YEAR. Eight offenders have been dealt with at Wanganui since the beginning of the year for being in a state of intoxication when in charge of a motorcar. Instructions issued to the police are such that careful watch is being kept to arrest offenders, everything possible is being done to free the roads of the menace J of the drunken driver. “The problem of dealing with the drunken motorist is becoming more acute every day,” a Justice of the Peace said yesterday. "There are varying degrees of drunkenness, but any man can be affected to some degree by drink, and if he is affected he runs a serious risk in driving a motor car. The offence is so easily committed that it is often done without thinking. A man who has a drink or two thinks nothing of getting into his car and driving away. If there is an accident and he smells of liquor and acts peculiarly, even though the cause of that may be shock, he is liable to arrest.” Motorists spoken to in Wanganui said that the efforts of the Minister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) to cope with the drunken dryer were commendable, but. apparently, the offence is still going on.
