FLEMINGTON MEETING ST. LEGER TO TEMPEST EARLY BIRD'S EASY MTN Received March 7, 7.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 7. The weather was fine and the attendance good, at Flemington to-day. Early Bird had a comfortable win in the Northcote Handicap. Disdain was lying second in the early stages but weakened at the finish. Chaldean led throughout in the Nursery Handicap to beat the fastfinishing Royal Sceptre. Harina was a close third. Xavier went a poor race. The inter-State horses Tempest (Adelaide), Respirator (Sydney) and Gay Prince (Perth) filled the places in the St. Leger. Tempest led over the last mile and hung out to beat the fast-finishing Respirator. Gay Prince was a fair third. The winner been a consistent colt. He finished second to Nuffield in the Victorian Derby and deserved to-day’s victory.
The Bourke Handicap saw an exciting finish between Micawber and Tetreen who raced head and head over the last two furlongs. Panax finished well. Stretto was seventh, after having every chance. Ortelle’s Star enhanced his Australian Cup prospects by winning the Autumn Handicap. Aitchengee was in his best form for some time, finishing fast for second. Dignitary showed his best form to date in third place. Trimon, scoring his first win for some time, had a comfortable victory in the First Division of the Apprentices’ Handicap. It was rider N. Powell’s first win at Flemington. R-oyal Cross led throughout the Second Division, in which Glengold finished well Ito beat Queen Esther for second. Love Parade was last all the way. Tetreen (Western Australia) has been purchased by Mr. Eric Connolly. Results: — Northcote Handicap. Early Bird 9.7 (E. Bartle) 1, Lady Montague 8.9 (F. Dempsey) 2, Denis Girl 7.8 (H. Badger) 3. Eleven started. Two lengths; one and a-half lengths. Disdain was fourth, 'rime, 1.371. March Nursery. —Chaldean 7.11 (A. Dewhurst) 1, Royal Sceptre 8.9 (D. Munro) 2, Harina 8.4 (F. Dummelt) 3. Twenty started. Half a neck; head. Hiawatha was fourth. Time, 1.122. St. Leger Stakes.—Tempest 8.10 (H. Badger) 1, Respirator 8.10 (E Bartie) 2, Gay Prince 8.10 (A. Reed) 3. Nine started—tne largest field in the history of the race. Head; three lengths. Anpapejo was fourth. Time, 3.02. Bourke Handicap. - • Micawber 8.3 (M. McCarten) 1, Tetreen 8.7 (R. Parsons) 2, Panax 7.8 (W. Elliott) 3. Sixteen started. Half a head; neck. Hamurah was fourth. Time, 1.24 a. Autumn Handicap. - Ortelle’s Star 8.13 (A. Reed) 1, Aitchengee 9.0 (A.
