Notice of the effect of the Social Security Act upon the membership of friendly societies is taken by Grand Master Bro. John McKay in a report which he is to present to the annual conference of the Auckland District Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. “During the first nine months of the year.” states the report, "the strength of the order in the Auckland province has advanced beyond 10.000. but since September there has been a slump in initiations. The passing of the National Security Act in October last year. ’ continues the report, “has affected the entry of new members who are anticipling the benefits promised under the Act. Ministers of the Crown have informed Bro. Shrimpton, secretary nf the Ntional Friendly Societies’ Council, that the section dealing with that portion of the Act which affects us as members of the friendly societies has been postponed until some future date. Deputies of the order and the Grand Master and members of the directorate are watching the position closely and members will be informed as soon as regulations affecting us are gazetted.’’
