To Save Animals From Vivisection

LOS ANGELES —Humane societies in California are campaigning for the adoption of the initiative measure to protect stray animals from vivisection. If passed, it would be the nation’s leading step toward final outlawing of the “barbarous horrible, and wholly unjustifiable” experimental ion on sentient animals, according to the California Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection League, leader in the move to place the proposal on the Statute books. Opposing, are the heads of the University of California, California Institute of Technology, Stanford, and University of Southern California; and the Commonwealth Club of California and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. They meet Ihe issue, squarely as one designed to limit “essential and invaluable” research by hindering the acquisition of subjects for vivisection. In the face of the greatest array of .medical spokesmen ever assembled for .a. ballot issue in California,’ the proponents are denying any permanent contributions of vivisection tn mankind, and they contend such a. practice as 'forever opposed to the Christian mans’date: “I will have merry and not ' sacrifice. ’ ’ . Listed as No. 2 among the 25 proposals on the State ballot, the- “State • Humane Pound Law” would prohibit :“ public or private poundmasters from (handing over any unclaimed animals .for vivisection other commercial purj poses, exempting kennels or enclosures maintained on premises of any accredit'ed laboratory licensed under the State ! Medical Practice Act, provided animals 'there were lawfully acquired; and it. , directs that all unclaimed or stray animals for which there is no “bona fide home to be put to death by an approved I humane method.” ; In urging an overwhelming “yes-” : vote, the humane societies use the slogan; “If you cannot give them a 'good home, grant, them, at least, a painless death. ’ ’ j Regrets “George, dear,” she said, with a blush, “do you know that. Mr Simpson asked me last night, to be his wife?” “Well, I like his impudence. The idea of proposing to an engaged woman! What did you say to him?” “I told him 1 was very sorry indeed, but he was too late.”
