OBITUARY
MISS C. STEWART LONG NURSING CAREER. One of the first nurses to be registered in New Zealand, Miss Caroline Heyland Gait Stewart, died on Wednesday in a private hospital in Auckland at the age of 89. Born in Northern Ireland. Miss Stewart was one of a family of 11, two of whom, herself and her sister, Miss M. Stewart, came to New Zealand at an early age. Her sister eventually became matron of the Thames Hospital and died some four years ago. Miss Caroline Stewart trained at the Gisborne Hospital and held the position of matron of that institution for 20 years. Tn spite of the long hours, arduous duties and lack of facilities which were features of hospital work in her day. Miss Stewart contended even as an octogenarian that a nurse’s career had many compensations and that if she were starting life again it would again be her choice. MRS. W. P. ALDRIDGE. The death occurred at Hamilton on Wednesday, of Mrs. Lucy Aldridge, wife of Mr. W. P. Aldridge, formerly chief postmaster at Hamilton. Mrs. Aldridge was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Nicholls and was born at | Whitianga. where her father was manager of the Kauri Timber Company, Limited. After her marriage at Inglewood Mrs. Aldridge resided at Wanganui. Napier. Wellington, Auckland. Oamaru and Timaru, prior to moving to Hamilton. She was prominently associated with social organisations connected with the Post and Telegraph Department and was a member of the Hanviton Lyceum Club. She is survived by her husband and one son.
