PATEA COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING HELD GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH 'Own Correspondent.) PATEA, Feb. 14. The monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held to-day. The council was of opinion that the problem of motor cyclists was one for experts to deal . with. The matter arose as the result of a letter from the Commissioner of Transport asking the council’s opinion regarding the restriction of motor-cycles on the roads. The chairman stated that the biggest percentage of accidents on the roads involved motor-cyclists. Improving Corners. Further consideration has been given to the improvement of visibility at corners, advised the Main Highways Board and in cases where improvements were most urgent proposals should be prepared immediately, not only for the taking of land but also for the setting back of fences and reconstructing the road at the intersection on easier curvature, thus obtaining the full advantage of added visibility. In other cases, the acquisition of land might be proceeded with in anticipation of the actual improvement work being carried out later as funds allowed or circumstances required. The council decided to keep the matter in view in framing future programmes, and the engineer was authorised to interview Mr. C. Tarrant regarding improvement to the corner on Karahaki Road. In the event of facilities being offered by owners, steps will be taken to set back fences at corners.

Revaluation of County. The Valuer General wrote .stating that the re-valuation being made by the county had progressed to the stage when it could be stated that the new valuations would be available for the ensuing rating year except in the Otoia Riding. He presumed that no hardship would fall on the Otoia ratepayers if the rates for the next year were levied on the existing valuations. It was decided to advise the department that the council was of the opinion that it would be better to arrange for the new valuation to take effect from April 1, 1940, when all would be uniform. Infectious Disease. The incidence of infectious disease had been fairly low during th? quarter, only one case having been notified state the quarterly report of me Sanitary Inspector, Mr. W. S. Steele. Building, plumbing and drainage works were inspected as opportunity offered and found to be satisfactory. Food premises were inspected from time to time and various lines of foodstuffs were examined in regard to packing and labelling. Det rio rated Lands. Cr. Pearce and the engineer were appointed to represent the Patea County at the meeting of County Councils between Rangitikei and Eltham to be held at Wanganui on Wednesday 15, to consider the question of deteriorated lands. The Wanganui branch, Farmers’ Union asked delegates to bring a plan of the area gone out of production in their county.
