MATAMATA MEETING

AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL CIRCUIT PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Feb. 3. Useful fields are carded for Matamata to-morrow and the annual race fixture of the local club should be most successful. Heavy rain has fallen throughout the province this week and the going should be nice and easy, though not exactly heavy, for this track is a good all-weather one. The long straight generally finds out horses deficient in stamina. Betting will be on the win-and-place system. The twelve remaining in the main event, the Matamata Cup, will furnish a fine contest, for they are representative of good provincial form. At the head now is De Friend, the Takapuna Cup winner. The weight he is to carry is 201 b. more than he won with last Saturday, but he will, be by no means out of it. He has proved himself a fine performer under weight and must be given the first consideration. Kena is one of the best handicap horses in the district and in view of his splendid form in the early spring and the fact that he is well forward a good race can be expected from him. With the easy track Gay Rose should come into her own once more, for she appreciated the heavy track at Ellerslie last Monday and defeated all but Cheval de Volee. Te Hai ran two solid races at Thames, beating all but Black Musk in the Goldfields Cup, and he won over seven furlongs on the second day. Scotland has no recent form, although easier track conditions may help him. The Thames winner Black Musk should show up again, for he is very useful. Miss Appellaat, too, is a stayer that will be suited herd. It is a long time since Day Wind showed any form, but Parquet finished very strongly at Te Rapa and is always a possibility on a big track. Forest Acre is likely to be a surprise packet and Star Artist has no recent form. De Friend and Gay Rose appear the best. The Open Sprinters. The smallest field of the day will contest the open sprint, the Waharoa Handicap, and here again the two tops should be right in it. Maori Song will be improved by his run last Monday, when he finished second to Royal Bachelor, and Tooley Street was very unlucky each day at Thames. This pair will be able to handle the worst of going. Tosh is overdue and Galilee, though not reliable, will be suited by the small field. Royal Dance may show a return to form on his home track, and Valimeen revealed a lot of pace at Thames and failed only in the last hundred yards. Maori Song and Tooley Street should fight it out. Grand City, also a local horse, has only to run up to Thames form to be very dangerous in the Walton Handicap and one of his most dangerous opponents may be Very Glad, who is improving. The latter won his first race on this track last autumn. Many of those engaged are also in earlier ' events and the number may be reduced. A fine prospect in the opening event, the maiden Hinuera Handicap, is Kaspian, who was unlucky at Ellerslie last Monday. Bryce Street will have Manawahe to account for in the Hurdles, and Max.vn may be bothered to concede weight to the several smart sprinters below her in the Railway Hack. The three-year-old Solitary, twice unlucky at Thames, may have her chance to beat the wto-year-olds ir. the Putaruru Stakes, and Ureklaw will be sought after if reserved for the Okoroire Hack. Form horses engaged to-morrow are the following:— Hinuera Handicap.—Kaspian. Vai Lu. Little Idea. Tirau Hurdles.—Bryce Street, Manawhae, Kittle. Waharoa Handicap.—Maori Song, Tooley Street. Valimeen. Railway Hack. Sir Tommy, Maxam, Spearford. Matamata Cup.—De Friend, Gay Rose, Te Hai. Putaruru Stakes.—Solitary, Brazen Bold, Sir Lysander. Okoroire Hack. —Ureklaw, Nuipapa, Long Span. Walton Handicap.—Grand City, Very Glad, Royal Dance. hollowing is the list of acceptors:— HINUERA HANDICAP.
