OTAIHAPE ALPINE CLUB

EXCURSION TO WANGANUI MEETING WITH HERETAUNGA T.C. (From Our Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE, Jan. 30. A party of ten mem be s of the Otaihape Alpine Club enjoyed a

change from the usual form of trips yesterday at Wanganui, the greater part of the day being spent at the Castlecliff Beach, where swimming, surfing and sunbathing were the most popular. All enjoyed themselves and it has been agreed to have another “field day’’ as opportunity permits. A small party has been arranged by the club captain, Mr. D. M. MacKay. to meet the Heretaunga Tramping Club at Boyd's Bush in the Northern Ruahines nexi week-end. Tne Otaihape Club has not met the Heretaunga Club since Easter last, when both were encamped in the same hut at Dawson Falls, Mt. Egmont. The friendly spirit existing between the two clubs has promoted the arrangement oi this next outing. If sufficient numbers are offering 1t is hoped that an ascent of Ruapehu will be made about the middle of February. Members will not experience so much difficulty in climbing Ruapehu this year, since the Whakapapa Glacier is not yet showing any signs of crevasses. The only crack appears beneath Paretetaitonga, and this is not more than a foot wide. The problem of transport again presents a difficulty and the trip can only be made if sufficient numbers are offering.
